Our VISION is simple.

“Grounded in a commitment to local Gaelic language and culture, our school supports the personal, social, and intellectual growth of students in a caring, creative, and inclusive learning environment. We promote a spirit of global citizenship that is rooted in the local community, its people, and the natural world.”

In 2019 a meeting was held at the Mabou campus of the Gaelic College to discuss the idea of establishing a Gaelic medium school. The meeting consisted of parents, educators and community members who all have a connection to Gaelic language and culture and want to see it thrive in Nova Scotia. The meeting ended with a resolve to form a working group that would formulate plans for an independent Gaelic school in Mabou. A year later the group began planning how to make this school a reality.

The working group wanted to create the best possible learning environment, so we took the time to look at various models of alternative education. We met with educators from several independent and immersion schools and determined that a Montessori inspired approach aligns with our educational philosophy; allowing the child to be a leader in their own learning based on their natural interests and abilities. We were inspired by the Pirurvik preschool which combines Montessori methodology with language immersion and traditional knowledge. We intend for Gaelic culture and local knowledge to be at the core of what and how students will learn and Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide.

There is much work to be done before the school opens its doors, but a solid plan has been put in place to get us there. There has been significant work done on curriculum, policies and a fundraising strategy is in place. The next step is for interested parents to become engaged and support the development of what will be an innovative school, thoroughly integrated into the community.
